Status of the Oil Spill and Panama City Florida

We've had many phone calls lately regarding the impact of the oil spill on the Panama City, and Panama City Beach Florida areas.

Several customers were so concerned with the news reports they even canceled their visits.

So allow me to alleviate as many fears and concerns about this situation as possible....

As you can see from the image (the dark spot is the oil slick), the oil is moving away from Panama City Florida which is located at the very top right of the image (at the 30 degrees latitude line).

You can follow the progress of the slick here.

Once the slick hits the gulf stream, it will travel in a southerly direction.

Panama City and Panama City Beach Florida are alive and well and expected to not be directly impacted by the oil spill to any large degree.

We may see indirect impacts on tourism related to off shore fishing far out in the gulf, and perhaps higher than normal prices on seafood.

However, our beaches are expected to remain clean and relatively free of oil.

The worst case scenario would be small "tar/oil balls" or light oil stains on some of the outer beaches which is serious enough with the potential crisis to effect the entire fishing industry.

According to Secretary Michael Sole, of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection:

At a meeting, Tuesday in Ft. Walton... At most, our area would see a few instances of splotchy tar balls and light staining of the sand again, in only a few areas.

The News Herald reported per the authorities that there is no chance any oil will wash up on our beaches over the next few days and that Bay County has been approved to purchase all the boom it may need to protect the areas greatest asset - The Beach.

In addition, the wind is directing the spill away from us which is good for us and unfortunately bad for those south and east of us.

Our hearts go out to those directly impacted by this terrible tragedy and wish all the best.

In the meantime, if you are planning your vacation to the Panama City Florida area come and enjoy the beaches and all the family entertainment venues we have to offer.
